Chapter 11
Everyone was asleep. But I was still awake. My mind kept thinking about ways to rig some old cell phones as cameras so we can mount them in certain spots on the tank walls and stream live video feed of the piranhas to our computers. I sat up in bed and realized Mutt wasn’t in his normal spot by my feet.
I walked over to the living room and, sure enough, there he was, lying in his doggie bed again by the fire, which had long since died.
I didn’t mean to wake him up or nothing, but his head popped up as soon as he heard me. I picked him up and took him into Mom’s office so he could keep me company while I browsed online for ideas.
“Here you go, buddy.”
I put Mutt on the daybed and covered him up with a blanket. I turned on the desk lamp and started checking out do-it-yourself sites to figure out some way to hack the old phones we had.
I found a really cool site that gave me a step-by-step on how to rig a motion sensor from a room deodorizer to an old phone and turn it into a motion sensor camera. That’s so cool! For about fifty dollars, I could get everything I needed from the Duane Reade down the street.
I wrote down a list of everything. Sure, there were some things that were electrical but Dad had a whole closet full of stuff. Everything else I could get at Radio Shack for next to nothing. I copied down the website so I could check it out again if I had to. Then I looked over at Mutt.
He seemed glad to have some company. He lay there, smiling at me, all perky now. Since he seemed so chipper, I went and got him some Beggin’ Strips; his favorite, next to tofurkey pizza. It made me real happy to see him eat ’em all.
I went back into the kitchen to get him some more and got myself some trail mix and a Naked Juice Smoothie. I knew it wouldn’t hit the spot but it was all I could find that I could stand. While I was there I got Mutt a bowl of water too. He lapped it up. Cool. Maybe he was feeling better, after all. Mom said there was nothing wrong with him, just old age.
We both sat there on the daybed munching on stuff, drinking our drinks. It felt real peace-like.
“Well, buddy. You need to hang in there, okay? Don’t let me down.”
He just looked at me. It was as if he was trying to tell me something. But maybe I was just tired. We stared at each other for a while. I don’t really remember what made me do it, but I took his head into both of my hands, real gentle-like, and looked him straight in the eyes.
“I just want you to know that you’ve been my best friend since before I even knew what a best friend was.
